The Rays tried "aggressively" to re-sign Maddon, during that period, but Maddon opted out of his contract.[38] Maddon finished his tenure with a record of 754 wins and 705 losses.

With due respect to "bob nightingale" (Pretty sure I know the name), Maddon wasn't fired.

CIN/COL Trade
#1
CIN sends:

Taylor Sparks 3B
Simon Mercedes P

COL sends:

Adam Jones OF 7.5
3.21 in ‘19
Phil Bickford

Cincinnati is using one of their few assets in cap room to take on Jones’s 7.5 while trying to infuse some much-needed talent into their moribund system. CIN has two of the next 20 picks and a pool of players available of great interest to the club. Bickford could still figure into future bullpen plans as he continues to rebuild his career. COL to confirm.

This is a move to free some salary for FA or other moves. Need more flexibility. We send a RP prospect who had a K rate over 14 last year. He is a former 1st rounder figuring it out as a RP. Also move pick 3.21 which should provide solid value.

Mercedes and Sparks are throw ins, but the real advantage I gain is the cap flexibility.

Thanks for the easy talks Cincy!

Veto.

I think most teams would pay more if forced to in order to open up 7.5m in cap. Not enforcing the guidelines hurts rebuilding teams.

I think most of us know how much I differ in opinion on how to handle surplus cap reserves (see the failed Carrasco deal last year for the newbies; I subscribe to the concept that the first dollar of extra cap is worth less than my last; in other words, the first $7.5m of Cincy's $55m in space is worth less than the last $7.5m).  Try to pull this trade off when all Cincy has left is $7.5m in cap space and there's no way it happens.  So to take on a small return for a small amount of cap is still easily approvable in this situation, in my opinion.
